A Codice Fiscale is your Italian tax identification number — and you'll need it before you can open a bank account, sign a lease, buy property, see a doctor, or start a business. Here's how Americans get one.
What Is a Codice Fiscale?
The Codice Fiscale is a unique 16-character alphanumeric code assigned to individuals in Italy, generated from your name, place of birth, and date of birth. It functions similarly to a U.S. Social Security number and is required for virtually every administrative or financial activity in Italy:
- Opening an Italian bank account
- Signing lease or property purchase agreements
- Registering with the healthcare system (SSN)
- Starting a business or obtaining a Partita IVA
- Paying taxes or filing Italian returns
- Even getting a phone contract
Two Pathways to Obtain It
Option A: Italian Consulate (U.S.-Based)
- Contact your nearest Italian consulate
- Provide justification for applying from the U.S.
- Submit valid passport and proof of address
- Complete the application form (AA4/8 or equivalent)
Option B: Agenzia delle Entrate (In Italy)
- Schedule an appointment in advance
- Present your passport
- Bring dichiarazione di presenza, visa, or Permesso di Soggiorno
- Complete forms before arriving
- Usually receive certificate immediately
Name Considerations
Use the name exactly as it appears on your passport unless you were born in Italy (then use your birth certificate). For marriage-related name changes, provide a certified marriage certificate — preferably with an apostille and Italian-certified translation.
Mismatches between your Codice Fiscale and your U.S. documents can cause significant problems later when notaries or banks need to verify your identity.
Can You Calculate Your Code in Advance?
Yes — the Codice Fiscale follows a deterministic algorithm. Many online calculators can generate it from your personal data. However, this self-calculated code is not officially issued and may differ slightly from the official assignment. For formal purposes, you need the official issued document from the Agenzia delle Entrate.
